As of January 2019, Hinson serves on several committees in the Iowa House – the Judiciary committee; the Public Safety committee; and the Transportation committee, where she is chair. She also serves on the Transportation, Infrastructure, and Capitals Appropriations Subcommittee.
On May 13, 2019, Hinson filed paperwork to run against Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer in Iowa's 1st congressional district.
In 2018, Hinson faced a competitive race, involving TV ads, against teacher Eric Gjerde. She defeated him 52%-48%.
The 20-county district flipped parties in 2018. National political forecasters expect the 1st District will be one of the most competitive races this year. She was announced as a ‘contender’ by the National Republican Congressional Committee. She has been endorsed by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and Lt. Governor Adam Gregg.
