Art Modell was an American businessman and sports executive who was the owner of the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL). He was born on June 23, 1925 in Brooklyn, New York. He attended New Utrecht High School and later attended City College of New York. Modell began his career in the advertising industry, working for the New York City-based firm of Benton & Bowles. He eventually became the president of the company. In 1961, Modell purchased the Cleveland Browns for $4 million. He was the team's owner for the next 35 years, during which time the Browns won three NFL championships. In 1996, Modell announced that he was moving the Browns to Baltimore, Maryland, where they became the Baltimore Ravens. The move was controversial and sparked a lawsuit from the city of Cleveland. Modell eventually settled the lawsuit and was allowed to keep the Browns' name, colors, and history in Cleveland. Modell was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001. He died on September 6, 2012 at the age of 87. At the time of his death, Modell's net worth was estimated to be around $500 million.
