He began his career in the theater, appearing in productions in New York City and on Broadway. He made his film debut in 1932 in the movie "The Big Broadcast of 1936". He went on to appear in over 50 films, including "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" (1938), "The Great Dictator" (1940), "The Big Sleep" (1946), and "The Ten Commandments" (1956). Steele was married twice, first to actress Joan Blondell from 1933 to 1939, and then to actress Ann Sheridan from 1941 to 1949. He died on August 24, 1959, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 58. Alfred Steele had an estimated net worth of $2 million at the time of his death.
